Held at Temple Shalom of Newton, 175 Temple Street, Newtow
Most couples will seek out a clergy connection before their marriage. For all couples, the interaction with clergy before marriage is often pivotal, influencing their future connection to Judaism and the Jewish community. How can clergy turn these pre-marital counseling meetings into opportunities to nurture their Jewish choices and create a Jewish home for their family?
This intensive two-day practicum will provide clergy with the tools to make a meaningful connection with every couple before and after marriage. Participants will gain skills to strengthen each couple’s communication around their faith backgrounds and the complicated threads that connect each partner to their family’s religious heritage. The workshop will provide clergy with many tools and useful exercises designed to help both partners explore their needs around religion in their past, present and future with a focus on transmission of a religious identity to future children. Counseling tools and communication exercises designed specifically for interfaith and conversionary couples will be included in the practicum.
The training will introduce the new CCAR publication, Strengthening Communication and Supporting Jewish Choices: A Pre-Marital Counseling Guide, written by Dr. Paula Brody, Director, Outreach Training Institute, who will facilitate this practicum in conjunction with Rabbi Howard Jaffe, National Rabbinic Liaison, URJ Outreach.
Offered in collaboration with the Central Conference of American Rabbis (CCAR)
